Scientific Research

Major Achievements and Contributions

In the early of 1960's he started to study Finite Element Methods. In the spring of 1964, he independently developed first FEM program for plane elastic problem in China, and successfully solved the stress analysis problems of Luijiaxia Dam (First big dam in China) and others. In 1972 he began to study the analysis method of elastic contact problems with initial gaps and friction and its application. In 1973 he first discovered that the stress states inside contact bodies depend on the history of imposing loading, and developed a suit of successive linearization methods in terms of incremental theory and variational inequality, and then coded the program, and effectively solved the difficult problems risen in Gongzhui Dam with long vertical cracks and its reinforcement. Since 1980 he was in charge of a series of Nation S/T Key Projects of '6.5', '7.5', '8.5', '9.5' ED Plan, and the key project of CAS, and 10 projects funded by NNSFC, and completed several large-scale software, such as FEPS, BDP, SEFEM and so on, with his colleagues. With developing the software he proposed a suit of software engineering methods to develop the software of science and engineering computing, such as adaptive organization method of algorithms, configuration model of software system and so on. In recent 2 decades he developed a kind of high order and multi-scale analysis method for predicting the physics and mechanics performance of heterogeneous materials, such as composites with periodic and random distribution of multi-scale particles /cavities, and solved some material /structural problems.

He has published more than 150 papers and reports, 3 books, and completed more than 30 technical reports to government or companies. He has been awarded more than 8 times of higher prizes.

Recent years he has been developing a suit of high order multi-scale methods for predicting the comprehensive heat transfer (conduction-radiation-convection coupling) and thermo-mechanics coupled performances of super-light structural materials. And at the same time he is also studying the atomic-continuum coupled model and algorithms for the dynamics and thermo-mechanical behaviors at micro-nano-scales, and a local quantum-atomic-continuum model.
